A recent study has demonstrated a significant link between microscopic colitis (MC) and an increased likelihood of developing psoriasis, with individuals with MC nearly twice as likely to develop the condition as those in the general population. Conducted as a large-scale nationwide matched cohort study in Sweden, this research sought to explore the connection between these two immune-mediated diseases, both associated with genetic predispositions linked to the major histocompatibility complex. The study tracked the development of psoriasis in individuals diagnosed with MC over an average period of 9.2 years, utilizing extensive data from Swedish healthcare and government registers.
The findings indicated that out of every 91 patients with MC, one additional case of psoriasis was observed over 10 years, corresponding to an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.82. This comprehensive study, notable for its scale and validation of its diagnostic methods, revealed consistent risks across different genders and a particularly increased risk within the first decade following an MC diagnosis.
