Women experience irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) more than men, and while the disease mechanism remains unclear, sex steroids could play a role in IBS’s onset and symptom severity. This review observes estrogens and androgens and the role they may play in visceral sensitivity, gut motility, and psychological conditions, possibly through modulating the gut-brain axis. Learning more about the relationships within sex-specific steroids and the host provides neuroendocrinology awareness of the pathophysiology, epigenetics, and treatment of IBS patients.
