Researchers conducted a meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of organic diseases, such as colorectal cancer (CRC), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and microscopic colitis (MC), detected through colonoscopy in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). CRC was rare in IBS patients below 40 years of age or those without alarming symptoms. IBS patients with alarming symptoms had notably higher rates of CRC (2.47%) and IBD (8.86%) compared to those without such symptoms. This meta-analysis provides valuable insights into the outcomes of colonoscopy in IBS patients and associated risk factors, which can contribute to clinical decision-making and guideline development.
