University of Cambridge researchers developed a new blood test for diagnosing bipolar disorder, identifying biomarkers linked to the condition. When combined with an online psychiatric assessment, this method effectively distinguishes bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder. Capable of diagnosing approximately 30% of bipolar cases on its own, the test’s accuracy improves with digital mental health assessments. This innovative approach, still in a proof-of-concept phase, could enhance traditional psychiatric diagnosis methods and provide insights into the biological aspects of mental health conditions. Involving more than 3,000 participants, the study combined self-reported assessments with blood sample analyses for more accurate and faster bipolar disorder diagnoses. This research, which could also lead to new treatments for mood disorders, is patented and backed by the Stanley Medical Research Institute and Psyomics.
