Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, present significant challenges due to their chronic, relapsing nature and the wide range of symptoms and complications they cause. While there is no cure, effective management can greatly improve patient quality of life. The Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition provides a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating IBD, involving specialists from dermatology, rheumatology, behavioral health, and more.
IBD is diagnosed through a combination of medical history reviews, imaging studies like magnetic resonance enterography and computer tomography enterography, laboratory tests, and endoscopic procedures. Treatments at AHN include medications such as biologics and corticosteroids to target inflammation, therapeutic endoscopy for complications, and nutritional and lifestyle support. Surgery is sometimes necessary for severe cases. Patient education and empowerment are key components of care. AHN offers ongoing follow-up, resources, and support groups to help patients actively manage their condition and enhance their treatment outcomes.
