A recent study reviewed the appropriate evaluation process and management options available for portosystemic encephalopathy, which involves primary and secondary prophylaxis, dietary changes, and more. Liver transplant is generally not considered a viable option for patients with hepatic encephalopathy due to poor prognosis and quality of life. The study concludes that portosystemic encephalopathy is associated with a lower survival rate, frequent relapses, diminished quality of life, increased burden on caregivers, higher risks of falls and impaired driving ability, and lower income.
