Magnesium is clinically relevant for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to its role in vascular calcification and mineral metabolism. Studies have shown an inverse association between serum magnesium and adverse outcomes in people with CKD, leading to intervention studies on magnesium administration. Clinical studies have demonstrated that magnesium administration can improve parameters of vascular function, calcification, and mineral metabolism in people with CKD, and magnesium administration in people with CKD is considered safe. Ongoing magnesium intervention studies will contribute to increasing knowledge on the potential of magnesium administration in people with CKD.
