Researchers reviewed recent advances in the treatment and diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), emphasizing the importance of identifying and treating the underlying causes. The most used pharmacological treatment involves non-absorbable antibiotics and non-absorbable disaccharides; other agents, such as branched-chain amino acids, probiotics, alternative antibiotics, or intravenous L-ornithine L-aspartate, are available, but their efficacy is still a subject of debate. The researchers highlight the need for further research.
