Researchers analyzed the plasma concentration differences of 19 proteogenic and 4 non-proteogenic amino acids and 19 neurotransmitters between healthy individuals and those with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Notable differences were found between healthy controls and specific FGID groups in the levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), ornithine, and alpha-aminobutyric acid. However, most neurotransmitters and other amino acids showed no significant variation. Researchers concluded that while some correlations were found between certain amino acids and neurotransmitters, overall differences in their plasma concentrations between FGID patients and healthy controls were minor.
