Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive decline in renal function and is associated with morbidity and mortality, especially from cardiovascular disease. Even with the best current treatment, disease progression is common, with some patients requiring kidney transplantation or dialysis. Transplantation can substantially reduce mortality and improve quality of life, but access to transplantation is limited in low-income countries. Cell-based therapy is a promising strategy for treating CKD, with favorable safety profiles in clinical trials. This chapter summarizes recent clinical trials of cell therapy in kidney diseases.
