Researchers presented a study at the 2023 American Urological Association Annual Meeting that evaluated the use of blue light flexible cystoscopy (BLFC) as an adjunct to white light cystoscopy for the surveillance of patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The study included 319 individuals, and 436 BLFC procedures were performed, resulting in 28% of malignant findings being detected exclusively by blue light, and 5% not being seen by blue light. The overall hit rate of biopsies in NMIBC surveillance was improved with BLFC.
Patients with high-risk disease benefited the most from blue light, with some undergoing office fulguration. The authors suggest that combining BLFC with immediate fulguration of tumors in an outpatient setting may positively impact patients’ burden in NMIBC and warrants further evaluation regarding its effect on overall outcomes in patients.
