In a recent study, researchers explored the relationship between diet and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) by addressing common patient questions and providing dietary guidance. The research involved a four-step process, including patient surveys to identify frequently asked questions, systematic literature reviews, and the development of guidance statements based on the evidence. The study focused on key dietary elements like vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin supplements, and low-calorie or low-glycemic index diets, and gathered patient feedback on the recommendations provided.

The findings from a review of 28 systematic reviews helped develop seven guidance statements on diet’s impact on inflammation, immune response, and health outcomes in patients with SLE. While specific dietary recommendations for SLE are still lacking, the positive feedback from patients highlights the importance of further research to refine dietary strategies and improve the quality of life for individuals with SLE.
