University of Cambridge researchers developed a method to improve the diagnosis of bipolar disorder using a simple blood test to identify biomarkers associated with the condition. This approach, when combined with an online psychiatric assessment, enhances diagnostic accuracy and ensures patients receive appropriate treatment. The study found that while the blood test alone could diagnose up to 30% of bipolar disorder cases, its effectiveness significantly increased when paired with digital mental health evaluations. This method helps differentiate between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, which require distinct pharmacological treatments.
The blood test, still in the proof-of-concept stage, offers a promising complement to existing psychiatric diagnostic tools. The study used data from the Delta study, which included over 3000 participants. The research highlighted the test’s ability to identify significant biomarker signals for bipolar disorder, correlating primarily with lifetime manic symptoms. The combination of patient-reported information and the biomarker test significantly improved diagnostic outcomes, providing a faster and more effective way to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.
