A study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (SID)—a condition where the enzyme sucrase-isomaltase, important for digesting sucrose, is lacking—in patients with presumed irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea/abdominal pain/bloating (IBS-D/M). Among 31 participants, 35% had SID. Symptoms included diarrhea (63.6%), abdominal pain (45.4%), and bloating (36.4%). Patients with SID had less abdominal pain compared to those without (Odds Ratio: 0.16). The study suggests that SID should be considered in patients with IBS-like symptoms and more research is needed to explore this condition’s features and dietary impacts.
